Pattern Throwback – Calavera Sugar Skull

Pattern Throwback Thursday
The Pattern Throwback this week is the Calavera Sugar Skull pattern. Continuing a bit of a Mexican theme from last week’s Las Flores de Frida. I’m not really into skulls in general, but I love sugar skulls. I think my stitched version is a pretty funky chap.

In the pattern I also included a female version with earrings and stuff. A skull with earrings, of course! 🙂

Look at the watermark on the photos, 2011! Time flies like crazy! Maybe it’s time to do another pattern to go along with the other Mexican inspired ones. Next could be a Calavera Catrina, I’ve been thinking about that for a while.

Pattern Throwback – Las Flores de Frida

Pattern Throwback Thursday
For this week’s Pattern Throwback it’s one of my all time favourites: Las Flores de Frida, Frida’s Flowers. I admire Frida Kahlo so much. I knew eventually I’d do a pattern portrait of her, but it took its time because I wanted it to do her justice. It couldn’t feel like a caricature of her. I hope I have captured some of her spirit in the pattern. If only the teeniest tiny bit.

It’s a portrait of Frida, but somewhat simplified to make it easier to stitch, but I wanted it to feel like a real person, not like someone who’d been airbrushed to look perfect. She was flawed and fierce. On my blog I wrote a couple of posts about the making of Frida, you can find them here: making the pattern and stitching the pattern.

You can find Frida in my various shops: polkaandbloom.comPayhipEtsy.

Dala Horse – Pattern Throwback Thursday

Pattern Throwback Thursday
It is time for another Pattern Throwback Thursday and this week it is the Dala Horse pattern. I love Dala horses. It’s a Swedish icon, of course, but growing up in Denmark, it’s a very familiar thing too. I love that the wooden horses are still hand painted so each one is unique. And they are so colourful, that inspires me a lot.

My Dala horse pattern has the classic red colour, but you can stitch it in any colour you like. Dala horses come in all sizes and colours. 🙂

If you want to grab yourself a copy to stitch the Dala Horse pattern you can of course find it in my various shops: – Payhip – Etsy.

Cozy Curlicues – Pattern Throwback Thursday

Pattern Throwback Thursday
I have made quite a few patterns over the years and sometimes I forget that I made this pattern or that one. I decided I’d start giving myself a weekly reminder of the patterns I made. So every Thursday I’ll do a wee ‘Throwback Thursday’ post for an old pattern. 🙂

cozy curlicues

Today I am reminding myself of  the Cozy Curlicues pattern. It’s one of the very earliest patterns. It’s still one of my favourites. I love the meandering curvy lines. It’s kinda like a stitch sampler and if you’re looking to practice your chain and lazy daisy skillz this is a great pattern. 🙂

You can of course get your hands on Cozy Curlicues in my various shops: polkaandbloom.comPayhipEtsy.

Birthday discount!

I’m having a celebration with cake and balloons and confetti!

The reason for this party? First of all, it’s my birthday! I turn 40 today! Yeah, I can barely believe it. Cake for me. 🙂

But there’s an even greater reason to party. I am now able to offer patterns and ebooks directly from my own Polka & Bloom site again. I’ve not been able to do that since the start of 2015! So I’m super-super happy about this!

Below you can read more about why I’ve not been able to do this and how it will work from now on.

Confetti and balloons for Polka & Bloom!

To celebrate my birthday and the good news for my shop, you can go stock up on patterns and ebooks with 40% off until Sunday, May 1. EU/UK customersRest of world customers.

Use this code: BALLOONS. Only valid for patterns and ebooks.

EU VAT funtimes!

If you’ve followed Polka & Bloom for a while, you may remember that I’ve talked about the incredibly frustrating EU VAT law that came into force on January 1st, 2015.

In a nutshell, since the start of 2015, I’ve not been able to offer ebooks and digital patterns on my own site because it would mean a LOT of confusing dealing with VAT. Seriously, the different countries interpret things differently and some countries don’t even know what to do about small businesses like Polka & Bloom.

So much frustration and confusion over the past year and a bit. Tears. Swear words.

The dumb law hasn’t gone away, sadly. BUT. I have finally figured out a way to use the shop on my own site to offer patterns and ebooks. YAY!

I have basically had to manually copy all the pattern and ebook items to a separate section for EU/UK customers. Not a glamorous job at all!

EU/UK customers will now be able to buy patterns and ebooks without paying the current VAT rate in their country for digital products. However, these items will be delivered by email and not a direct download. Because that dumb EU law says that some human intervention has to take place for the purchase to be exempt from VAT.

Super annoying, I know. But by doing it this way, EU/UK save money (almost 30% VAT in some countries!) and I save a lot of hazzle.
